The Boeing Group wanted to increase transparency and collaboration across their numerous vertical business units. Legacy, siloed approaches to data-sharing had created inefficiencies and redundancies across the company. They asked us to develop a UX strategy and visual design to create a unified, highly-customizable internal dashboard and management system.
The research phase began with extensive stakeholder interviews and persona creation to target the key user groups and customize the system to their specific needs across all vertical and horizontal segments.
After competitive analysis of current trends and best practices in data visualization, multiple rounds of iterative wireframing and concepting were conducted. We worked collaboratively with the internal Boeing development team to ensure our design recommendations could be accomplished with their backend systems.
While acknowledging the established Boeing branding guidelines, we expanded the visual boundaries to create a friendly, easy to use interface. We employed the process of addition by subtraction to avoid visual clutter and focus on essential information and work flows. Adequate white space and subtle background elements direct users' attention to the most relevant aspects of the data.
It was important for power users to have the ability to manipulate the data comparisons and visualizations down to a very granular level. At the same time the custom tools needed to be intuitive enough that novice users weren't frustrated. A system of pre-made dashboard templates based on the key persona groups was developed. Key metrics libraries are easily accessed through drag and drop components that onboard new users easily while maintaining the complex customization required.
