The mission of the Tribal Government of St. Paul Island is to drive measurable change through systemic and scientific data. To accomplish their goal they have created the Indigenous Sentinels Network (ISN), powered by a SaaS platform to empower actionable insights that could benefit the broader tribal and First Nations communities.
Beyond a total branding effort, the tribe needed modern UX / UI research and design to ensure the platform met the highest standards to evangelize the network and procure additional funding.
The goal of the branding effort was to acknowledge and give credit to the rich tribal and regional history, but also present the network as a cutting-edge, modern organization with best in class technological expertise. The final concept for the logomark combines the concepts of the extinction symbol and traditional Aluet basket art and patterns.
The result was a visual representation against the rise of extinction and climate disruption, while also providing a shield-like symbol that is rooted in the tribe's long stewardship of the environment. The color palette is based on warm earth tones and greens to set the brand and app design apart from the typical cool palettes found in many applictions.
The Saas platform is focused around two main user types. The administrators who create the surveys, programs, and reports, and the sentinels out in the field who conduct the actual data collection. Research was conducted for both workflows to ensure the optimal experience, giving special consideration for mobile optimization for in the field use under extreme weather and climate conditions.
